There have been different types of weighing scales used throughout history. The weight scales have been updated throughout history for the needs of the customer. And it is not just the need of the customers that has driven man to invent better weight machines. It is also the accuracy and the capacity and the need to find out the exact quantity and value of the object to be weight that has driven man to develop techniques to find the right weight machine. It is this search that has led to much advancement in the field of weight and scales. There are different types of weighing machines available today for different purposes.

Weight machines began with the humble beginnings of two scales and a fulcrum. This is how most things were weighed with a specified counter weight on one side and the item to be weighed on the other. As the size and the quantity of the items increased, it required for bigger scales. Also the amount of items that is to be measured is limited by the counterweights that are available. This seriously hampers the range of items to be measured.


Also after a point of time, measuring really big quantities becomes quite unrealistic. Therefore better methods to weigh items had to be discovered. Today weighing can be done with the help of pressure sensitive pads. These pads have electrical circuits that are sensitive to pressure and give a very accurate measurement of what is being weighed. This can be something very light to something very heavy. These improvements have ensured that products are weight in their right quantity which helps to minimize losses. This was the biggest problem in older weighing machines. Since they were not accurate, they could not measure a certain value properly.

For example, if 10 kg of rice is to be processed and 10.5 kg is actually measured and processed as 10 kg, we are incurring a .5 kg loss. This might seem something very minor but if large industries where in each cycle, 10 kg of rice is processed, the error would add a negative .5 kg. If the circle is run about a 100 times, each time there would be a loss of .5 kg. At the end of 100 circles, there would a loss of 50 kg of rice which is a lot. Therefore there needs to be a correct weighing machine that will accurately measure a quantity so that there is no wastage or loss.


Weight machines today are used in many places. The most common use of weight machines are in supermarkets when you need to buy rice or vegetables of a particular quantity. These machines are mostly electronic weight sensitive machines that will accurately measure the weight of the object or objects that you place on them. Also weight machines can be used to check your weight. These operate on the same pressure sensitive principle of the other machines but have much better threshold due to the need to support the weight of a human.
